First opened on October 21, 1967 as the original Sacramento Metropolitan Airport, the airport was renamed Sacramento International Airport in 1998 with the operation of a new terminal building. SMF ran its first international flights in 2002 when Mexicana provided nonstop flight services to Guadalajara.
