Sacramento City Travel Tips

Sacramento owes its existence to the efforts of a Swiss Immigrant John Sutter who was instrumental in putting it on the map. The city shares its history with the Gold Rush Phenomenon that came about in the mid 1800s. Now a city with more choices then one can think of when it comes to food, fun and frolic.

Tip 1 - A visit to the Sutter's Fort in Sacramento is for those who loved that part of American history that is entwined with memories of the Gold Rush. Sutter's Fort has a collection of artifacts from that era. Currently a State Historic Park the fort has been renovated recently and is visited by thousands of people each year.

Tip 2 - K Street Mall is for the shoppers, foodies and movie goers. All people who wish to visit Sacramento and have a good time with their families shouldn't give the K Street Shopping Mall area a miss.

Tip 3 - One of the first art museums in the west, the Crocker Art Museum has collections such as Asian Art, American and European Art, Photography and much more. Crocker was a privately held museum for a long time before opening its doors to the public in 1885.

Tip 4 - All those who would to visit the Old real west of the mid 1800s in its heydays should visit one of the last remnants from that era. Old Sacramento still retains its old world charm. There are museums, sightseeing options, landmarks and theaters one can choose from while visiting Old Sacramento. Currently a historic district with over 50 surviving buildings this is a must visit.

Tip 5 - Host to more than 400 animals Sacramento Zoo this is one of the biggest zoos in the country. It has grown from its original 4.2 acres to 14.3 acres presently. Since 1927 this zoo has grown from strength to strength and conducts conservation programs, classes and camps to inform young children on the importance of animals, conservation classes and much more.

The light rail transit or LRT system is a very successful feature that has added more attraction in Sacramento. It is operated by RT or Regional Transit District of Sacramento.

The LRT system was opened on 12th March 1987. The line runs for 18.3 miles. It has been now expended to 20.6 miles. These lines connect the city's eastern and north eastern suburbs with downtown Sacramento. The costs of building the rails were reduced as it was mainly an experimental step to build the trains. The high number of people riding the light train has made this mode of transportation very popular. The light rails operate all the year round.

The light rail system operates 36 light trains. The trains are available at a gap of 15 minutes during day and after every 30 minutes during night. The services are available from 4.30 am 1 am daily. The light trains have 31 stops or stations where people board the train or get down at.

The light rail transfer centres 9 in number. The tickets are bought from the self service machines and the officers on board check the tickets, the passengers have to produce the tickets when they are asked to do. Sacramento travel has been very easy with light train.

The success of these light trains has made the expansion plans see the light of the day. There were many expansion plans in the past and many are also yet to be undertaken. The increase in popularity has showed the need for expansion.

A 10.2 mile extension has been made to connect the suburban community of Folson. Then a 0.7 mile extension was added to the Sacramento's downtown Amtrak station. The 6.3 mile extension was added to connect the south line to Meadowview road.
