Volunteering at Sacramento Zoo is no doubt the best way to get your foot in the door!

Volunteering jobs at Sacramento Zoo ranger from scooping ice cream, cleaning animal exhibits to providing educational talks. Each year, there're approximately over 1500 individuals dedicated to helping the zoo. It's a rewarding experience which you'll gain much more than just the satisfaction of caring wildlife.

Volunteering jobs at Sacramento Zoo can be classified into five categories with a slightly different focus: Special Events, Teen Volunteers & Camp Counselors, Gardens Alive, Keeper-Aide and Docents. Duties and requirements of each type vary accordingly.

Special Events

Special events volunteers' primary duty is to help with set-up, organization, raffle ticket sales, food service and other matters of the zoo's major fond raising events such as Zoo Zoom, Zoo Parents Picnic, Ice Cream Safari, Wild Affair and etc. Volunteers are required to commit to a minimum of 3 events each year. Garden Alive

Do you like gardening? Would you like to contribute your tender loving care to some lovely gardens at Sacramento Zoo including Front Entrance Garden, Camellia Garden, Caliornia Zoo's Backyard, Rose Garden, African Garden, and Sensory Garden, to name just a few. If you want to help gardening, feel free to contact Sacramento Zoo.

Keep-Aide

Keep-Aides are required to be at least 18 years old. It's a job working in close proximity to animals. Yet physical contact won't be allowed. Specific duties of volunteers include cleaning cages, feeding animals, maintaining exhibits and working with keeper staff. All would be done under the supervision of zoo keepers. Surely you'll get some valuable practical experiences from this job.

Do you know a lot about animals and would love to share with people? If yep, volunteer to be the Sacramento Zoo Docents! You can provide tours and present station talks on animals and current conservation issues to zoo visitor. Training classes are required before taking up your quarters. As for now, Sacramento Zoo offers a full-time position: Supervisor of Collections. Supervisor of Collections will be working under the direction supervision of Zoo Curator. Main duties of Supervisor of Collections are supervising Zoo operations as assigned, coordinating animal transfers, overseeing animal maintenance, initiating appropriate permits, implementing safety policies and performing other duties as assigned.

Candidates with Bachelor's Degree in a biological science or related field would be preferred. Five years' relevant working experience in a zoological setting is required. Qualified candidates should be able to demonstrate proficiency in supervisory skills, work closely with others, perform well with minimal supervision and be excellent in verbal and written communication. If got hired, you can enjoy full medical, dental benefits and retirement benefits.

With a wide display of the animal kingdom set in an exotic and tranquil atmosphere, the Sacramento Zoo is a must-see destination on your visit to the city. The zoo was established on June 2, 1927 with 40 animals scattered in 4.2 acres. Until now, Sacramento Zoo has been expanded to the current 14.3 acres with 609 animals on display, including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians & fish.

Many new exhibits are added to the zoo in recent years. March of the Penguins is one of them. The new exhibit, opened to the public on April 6, 2007, features six penguins. November through January, Sacramento Zoo will be operated according to winter schedule, and you can visit it from 10 am to 4 pm every day with several exceptions:

1) The zoo will be closed all day on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

2) On December 24, all admission is free and the zoo will be closed early in 1:30 pm.

Please note: Though the zoo stops selling tickets on 4 pm daily, patrons are allowed to stay on zoo grounds for one extended hour after the closure.
