Sacramento will be beyond the expectation of tourists, especially those art lovers. They will be pleasantly surprised when they venture into one of the leading institutions in California - Crocker Art Museum, located in downtown Sacramento.

Established in 1885, Crocker Art Museum is the longest continuously operating art museum in the west. The museum is home to one of the state's premier collections of California art, a world-famous collection of master drawings, European paintings and comprehensive international ceramics collections. In addition, the museum also boasts a wide variety of public programs.

Each year, more than 140, 000 visitors are attracted to the museum to enjoy its diverse exhibits and Victorian architecture. If you are coming to Sacramento soon and have several days at your disposal, do pay a visit to Crocker Art Museum.

The wonderful thing of Crocker Art Museum is that the museum stays open until a relatively late hour compared to most major art museums. The normal hours of the museum are from 10am to 7pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, from 10am to 9pm on Thursday and from 10am to 5pm on Friday to Sunday. On Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day and Mondays, the museum is closed.

However, the museum will open its doors on Holiday Mondays, during the hours of 10am through 5pm. During holiday Mondays, the museum will offer hands-on art activities, music and dance performances, readings, film screenings and more in celebration of these holidays. The holiday Mondays include:

Best of all, the Crocker Art Museum also provides visitors with free hours. You are eligible for free admission on each third Sunday of the month called "Pay What You Wish Sunday", sponsored by Bank of America.

For the sake of visitors' convenience, dining is also available at the museum. There is a cafe called Crocker Cafe located on the first floor. Combining self service, fast casual and full-service dining, the cafe carries an exclusive selection of menu including soups, salads, sandwiches and hot entrees. Also served are wines and beers from the region.

As the museum is open until 7pm on Tuesday and Wednesday and 9pm on Thursday, the cafe will be a great dining venue for lunch and supper. Visiting Tips: In order to keep art safe and last for longer, the artworks in the museum are not allowed to touch. Also, visitors are required to keep potentially damaging items like food, drinks, umbrellas and ink pens out of the galleries. Baby backpack carriers and backpacks are also prohibited in the museum.

Visitors can store such items in a self-serve, coin-operated coat and parcel check offered on the first floor, south of the elevators. However, strollers, chest-carried baby packs and pencils are allowed in the museum.

Strollers and wheelchairs are available at the museum without any charge. They are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. You can check out them from the Front Desk or the Accessible Entrance.

For museum visitors, taking photos may be permitted for some artworks in the museum. However, flash, tripods or video equipment is prohibited. For instance, artworks featuring museum's permanent collection may be photographed. Taking photos of special exhibits or artworks on loan is forbidden. If you are uncertain what artworks are included in special exhibits, ask a Security Officer or Visitor Services Representative when touring the museum.

A limited number of internships are offered by the Crocker Art Museum each year. Students interested in gaining invaluable professional experience within the museum filed are welcome to the Crocker. Undergraduate juniors & seniors, graduate students and doctoral candidates are encouraged to apply for the internship positions if you're looking for first-hand experience in museum education, museum management and art history. 1) Public Relations Intern

The intern position has a flexible work schedule of at least 10 hours each week and requires a minimum four month commitment. Qualified interns are expected to get a better understanding of public and media relations and improve organizational, relational and professional skills. To qualify for the position, you must be undertaking a bachelor's or master's degree in Public Relations or Communication or related field. Basic public or media relations experience or coursework and good writing and verbal communication skills are essential.
